The Commons of Evergreen:  Parkinson’s Program

 

The Commons of Evergreen is offering several different Fitness and Wellness Programs that are beneficial to individuals impacted with PD.  All of the following classes are held at the same location, 480 State Street, Holland MI  49423 (Google Map Link).  The different classes are held in different rooms and at different times.  Please pay close attention to the details noted under each program.  If additional information is desired (ie., program fees, how to register, how to volunteer to become a “captain”, etc.), please contact Fitness Coordinator Erin Elenbaas (616-355-5129, [email protected]) or Fitness & Wellness Director Amy VandePoel  (616-355-5114, [email protected]).

 

Pedaling for Parkinson’s

There is new hope for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Dr. Alberts with the Cleveland Clinic, a biomedical engineer and avid cyclist, has done studies on “rapid leg movement”. He found that there was a 35% decrease in PD symptoms when a specific protocol was followed. Gait, balance, tremors and rigidity improved. Also, the participants in the studies saw an improvement in energy, stamina and cognitive functioning.  The Person with Parkinson’s (PwP) follows a specific exercise regimen on a stationary bike or a tandem bike with a co-rider (captain) who helps maintain the required pedaling speed, intensity, and duration. It is important to note that this exercise regimen is not a cure, but provides the PwP a
significant reduction in their symptoms.

Pedaling For Parkinson’s Spin Class

This 60-minute class is designed for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s. You will receive the same benefits as you do on the tandem bike (Pedaling for Parkinson’s).  See one of the fitness staff regarding your ability to take this more advanced class.  NOTE: Your own heart rate monitor is required.

Where: Fitness Studio, 2nd floor.
When:
  Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 am – 10:00 am.

Parkinson’s Exercise Class

This 60-minute class will use the support of a chair to perform seated and standing exercises–designed for those with Parkinson’s or neurological challenges.

Where: Seminar Room, 1st floor.
When:
  Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 am – 11:30 am.

Movement Matters

This 45-minute class for people with PD that have “graduated” from the LSVT BIG Therapy program. This class will focus on maximal daily exercises and functional movements in a group
setting. Participants will receive support and encouragement from peers as well as supervision by a trained professional. 45 min.

Where: Dance & Music Studio, 2nd floor.
When:
  Every Wednesday from 9:00 am – 9:45 am.

Balance & Stretch for Parkinson’s

This 55-minute class is designed exclusively for those dealing with PD and specifically emphasizing how to improve balance, increase flexibility, and strengthen your voice.

Where: To be determined.
When:  Every Monday and Wednesday from 10:15 am – 11:10 am.

 

Other Classes and Programs are available through the Commons of Evergreen that can also be beneficial to persons with Parkinson’s. The programs listed below may have additional charges associated with them or a Premium Package or Day Pass may be required.
